Peony season in NZ: when peonies are in, what they cost, and how to buy them

NZ peony season runs from about mid-October to mid-December, peaking in November. Which colours come first, published 2026 bouquet prices, and how to make them open.

Peony season in New Zealand runs from about mid-October to mid-December, with the most stems, the best choice and the steadiest prices through November. The New Zealand Peony Society puts most varieties in flower from late October to early December; a few late pinks can hang on into January in a cool year.

That is a window of six to eight weeks, which is why peonies are expensive, sell out, and why florists will tell you to book them early for a wedding. Outside it, any peony you see in a New Zealand shop has been imported or cold-stored.

When are peonies in season in NZ?

From mid-October to mid-December, peaking in November. Early varieties such as Coral Charm and Red Charm reach florists first, in the second half of October; the soft pinks and whites follow in November. Warm northern growing areas start a little earlier and the cold inland South Island finishes later, so the season rolls south over about two months.

The season, week by week

  • Mid to late October: the first coral and red peonies arrive. Choice is narrow and stems are at their dearest.
  • November: peak season. Pinks, whites and blush varieties are all in, and this is when most florists have peonies as a standing item rather than a special.
  • Early December: still good, especially from South Island growers. Order now if you want peonies for a work Christmas function.
  • Mid December onwards: the tail. A few late varieties, often gone by Christmas. See Christmas flowers in NZ for what replaces them.
  • January to September: not in season here. Peonies sold in these months are imported.

Where do peonies grow in NZ?

Peonies need a properly cold winter to flower well, so most commercial growing is in the South Island, with Central Otago, Canterbury and Southland the best-known areas, plus cooler parts of the central North Island. Central Otago growers around Naseby pick through November, which is why a late-spring snowfall there makes the news. Auckland and Northland are generally too mild to grow them well, so Auckland florists buy them in.

How much do peonies cost in NZ?

Expect to pay from about $89 for a small bunch of peonies delivered, and $125 to $200 for a full bouquet, in the 2026 season. Peony prices are highest at the start of the season and ease in November, when there is the most stock. These are prices the florists publish on their own sites:

  • Wild Poppies (Auckland): Coral Peonies and Red Charm Peonies from $89.99; Princess Pink, Violet Pink and White Peonies from $89. Source, read 29 October 2026.
  • Best Blooms (Auckland): Coral Charm Peonies $125; Large Lush Peony Bouquet $199; Peonies and Roses $199. Source, read 29 October 2026.

Can I get peonies for a wedding in NZ?

Yes, if the wedding is between late October and early December, and November is the safest month. Tell your florist early that peonies matter, and give them a colour range rather than a single variety, because which colours are open in a given week depends on the weather. For a wedding outside the season, garden roses, ranunculus or lisianthus give a similar full, soft look. Wedding flower costs covers budgeting.

How do I get peonies to open?

Peonies are usually sold as tight buds and open in one to three days. Re-cut the stems at an angle, put them in a clean vase of room-temperature water, and keep them somewhere warm and bright but out of direct sun. To slow them down, put them somewhere cool. If a bud will not open, gently wipe away the sticky sap on the outside, which can seal the petals.

Making them last

  • Change the water every second day and re-trim the stems each time.
  • Strip any leaves that would sit under the waterline.
  • Keep them away from the fruit bowl: ripening fruit makes cut flowers age faster.
  • Once fully open, a peony lasts a few days. The whole life of the stem, bud to drop, is usually about a week.
  • More care steps are in how to make flowers last longer.

When should I order peonies?

For a delivery in November, a few days ahead is usually enough. For a specific colour, a large quantity or an event, order two to four weeks ahead and ask the florist to confirm the variety closer to the date. Same-day peony orders are possible in peak season, but the popular pinks sell out first. Same-day flower delivery in NZ explains cut-off times.

Peonies and the rest of the year

Peonies sit in the middle of a New Zealand spring that also brings ranunculus, tulips and sweet peas. For what comes in and out of season month by month, see what flowers are in season in NZ.
